Certificate research: 12A/12

The difference
between 12A and 12 films is that of the type of media. The 12A refers to films
being played in cinemas, whereas just 12 films are video released that are
suitable for 12 year olds and over.
12A allows
younger people than 12 to see the film however they must be accompanied by an
adult, the 12 rating is only found on DVD’s and videos, they cannot be
leased/rented/bought by anyone younger than 12.
The examiners
that review the certificates for films have to think about what the audience
have experienced in real life and how much they know about the real world. Views
aged 12 or over often can cope with complicated story lines or difficult ideas
that are shown through the film.
Language used
must be infrequent, the themes used can be mature, but they must be treated
correctly to be suitable for younger teenagers. The reference to sex can be
used, they may reflect what 12 year olds could have heard from school. Violence
must not show too much blood or injuries, and with horror, there can be some
threat which can cause a scene to be tense.
This would
increase the viewing as there would be a wider audience to reach. These type of
films would usually be viewed by younger teenagers.
Examples of 12 rated films include; Avatar, Titanic,
Jurassic Park and Iron Man 2
